FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Add your two cents and make it count!
If you are a Baby Boomer (born between 1946 and 1964) we’d be interested in your story. A research fellowship through The Institute for Social Innovation has been awarded to Dr. Pat Hendrickson, Fellow, Fielding Graduate University to study the process of retirement. Mr. Steve Smith, MA, CPP, is a collaborator in this research.
The researchers are approaching the subject matter with the premise that retirees learn best from other retirees. The goal is to develop a substantive theory of the process of retirement seen through the lenses of those who have experienced or are experiencing the process. This research will aid in the development of interventions, program designs, and action models that address retirement vision among Baby Boomers. Results will help explain how individuals manage the transition from working full-time in the labor force to seeking and engaging in other alternatives. The majority of research encompassing this subject focuses on financial concerns, fiscal stability, and healthcare. Examining another perspective will aid in developing an understanding of the cultural values that drive expectations and perceived needs of those approaching retirement. Significant to the experiences of the participants is the complex nature of new and emerging technologies, advancements in healthcare, and intergenerational interdependencies. Among other issues, elder abuse, exploitation, and violence are societal considerations that affect retirees. The consequence of this research focus is that new motivations and conditions may emerge that explain or identify behaviors, considerations, and options significant to the retirement process.
A webinar will be provided to participants to discuss and explore the research findings. It is anticipated that the results will aid in the development of workshops for the university, alumni organizations, human resources departments, human services agencies, and community and faith-based organizations.
